A new version of Last. Gayle, Charles, Parker, William, Ali, Rashied: Touchin' on Trane. Overview (current section).

Gayle's mastery of free jazz is blended with a more traditional compositional style of jazz on this disc. Touchin' on Trane is composed of five original songs, and even includes ex-Coltrane drummer Rashied Ali. As the title insists, Coltrane is the influence for the music on this disc. The influence ranges from the upbeat tempo of "Giant Steps" in "Part A," while "Part D" is reminiscent of Coltrane's "Live in Japan" performances.

Touchin' on Trane is a live album by American jazz saxophonist Charles Gayle, bassist William Parker and percussionist Rashied Ali featuring performances inspired by John Coltrane which were recorded in Germany in 1993 for the FMP label.

Gayle's most celebrated work to date is the album Touchin' on Trane (FMP) with Parker and Ali, which received the "Crown" accolade from the Penguin Guide to Jazz. Though he established his reputation primarily as a tenor saxophonist, he has increasingly turned to other instruments, notably the piano (which was, in fact, his original instrument) and alto saxophone. In 2001, Gayle recorded an album entitled Jazz Solo Piano. It consisted mostly of straightforward jazz standards, and is a response to critics who charge that free jazz musicians cannot play bebop. In 2006, Gayle followed up with a second album of solo piano, this time featuring original material, entitled Time Zones. William Parker: Centering. Fabulous contemporary free jazz date by sax player Charles Gayle and two legends William Parker on bass and Rashied Ali on drums. Definitely touches on Trane. Superb recording by FMP.

Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings (Richard Cooke) gave this Crown Status Rating. Only 1 out of 2,000 recordings got this (i'm guessing).
