Energetic Gritty Joyous Organic Passionate Rousing Summery. Celebration Freedom Imagination Summer. Released as a double LP on Chisa/Blue Thumb in 1972, Hugh Masekela's Home Is Where the Music Is marked a sharp detour from his more pop-oriented jazz records of the '60s. Masekela was chasing a different groove altogether. He was looking to create a very different kind of fusion, one that involved the rhythms and melodies of his native South Africa, and included the more spiritual, soul-driven explorations occurring in American music at the time on labels like Strata East, Tribe, and Black Jazz as well as those laid down by Gato Barbieri on Bob Thiele's Flying Dutchman imprint.

Grrr is the second studio album by South African musician Hugh Masekela. It was recorded in New York City and released in 1966 via Mercury Records. Grrr was re-released on LP in 1968 on Wing/Mercury labels as Hugh Masekela and on CD in 2003 on Verve label. On this record, he seamlessly fuses jazz ideas with the rhythmically complex South African music known as Mbaqanga.

Masekela was chasing a different groove altogether. The South African and American quintet he assembled for the date is smoking.

The music on this album is amazing, and although dated in sound, grooves, playing style and recording technique, it has a particular beauty that is reminiscent of some of Miles Davis work after Kind of Blue. The CD jacket does not do the art work justice. The album art is particularly gorgeous when viewed on Album format. There's a mystical quality about the playing and sound of this album. It would be something you'd play on a warm afternoon or early evening during the summer. There's no flashy post-be-bop licks here.

Hugh Ramopolo Masekela (born 4 April 1939) is a South African trumpeter, flugelhornist, cornetist, composer, and singer. He is the father of American television host Sal Masekela. Masekela was born in Kwa-Guqa Township, Witbank, South Africa. He began singing and playing piano as a child. At the age of 14, after seeing the film Young Man with a Horn (in which Kirk Douglas plays a character modelled on American jazz cornetist Bix Beiderbecke), Masekela took up playing the trumpet. His first trumpet was given to him by Archbishop Trevor Huddleston, the anti-apartheid chaplain at S. .Introducing Hedzoleh Soundz released: 1973. Home Is Where the Music Is released: 1972.
