This 1982 two-LP set 14 previously unissued alternate takes of Wes Montgomery recordings from his days on Riverside. This attractive two-fer does give listeners a strong overview of the great guitarist's early recordings, including numbers with tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin, an organ trio with Mel Rhyne, a collaboration with vibraphonist Milt Jackson, meetings with his musical brothers Buddy and Monk, three quintet selections with James Clay and Victor Feldman, and an alternate version of "Tune Up" on which Montgomery.
Bumpin' (Wes Montgomery album). Backed up by a hauntingly beautiful and mesmerizing orchestra conducted and arranged by Don Sebesky, the music almost lifts the listener off his feet into a dreamy, water-like landscape
John Leslie "Wes" Montgomery (March 6, 1923 – June 15, 1968) was an American jazz guitarist. In the 1950s, the guitarist who stood head and shoulders above everyone else was a modest genius from Indianapolis called Wes Montgomery. Montgomery, like his idol, Charlie Christian, could play single-note lines like a horn player, but also incorporated chords and octaves in his solos. His jaw-dropping abilities made him seem super-human and he was soon hailed as one of the best jazz guitarists to have walked the planet, earning him top spot on this run down of the 50 best jazz guitarists ever. The album proved difficult for Montgomery to make as when he was recording with the full orchestra he was unable to get the results he wanted. Sebesky came up with the idea of Montgomery recording with a small group to which orchestral overlays were added.
