Metamorphosis is the fourth studio album by Iron Butterfly, released on August 13, 1970. Though not as successful as its predecessor Ball (1969), it reached number 16 on the US charts. Erik Brann, who left because of band disputes, was replaced by four session guitarists. Two of them, Mike Pinera, and Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt (called El Rhino on the sleeve), would become members of Iron Butterfly before the album's release.

The album spawned the single "Easy Rider (Let the Wind Pay the Way)", which reached number 66 on the Billboard chart, making it the band's biggest hit aside from. The album is noted for having one of the earliest uses of the talk box on a rock album.

On Metamorphosis, the group continued their musical explorations, adding a layered production to their sound. However, only Doug Ingle was enthusiastic about the band's new musical direction and most of the group refused to participate in the recording of the album, claiming it strayed too far from Iron Butterfly's signature sound. The truth of the matter is the rest of the band was right - under Ingle's direction, the group tries stylistic diversions that they do not have the ability to accomplish, including funk and acoustic ballads

Guitarist Erik Brann had left the group before Metamorphosis, replaced by Mike Pinera and Larry Rhino Reinhardt. Those two were originally given equal billing with the remaining group, known as Iron Butterfly with Pinera and El Rhino.
