Rhiannon Giddens – Freedom Highway. Genre: Jazz, Blues, Folk, World, & Country. referencing Freedom Highway, LP, Album, 558805-1. The slave sale notice printed on the inner sleeve for a 22 year old female with a child that can be bought "at the purchaser's option" should alert the listener on the first track that this is an album with substance. Giddens is an expressive singer, a very talented vocalist. This is an LP that I would not be surprised to hit many "Best of the Year" lists.
Freedom Highway, Grammy Award–winner and 2017 Grammy nominee Rhiannon Giddens' follow-up to her highly praised debut album Tomorrow Is My Turn, will be released by Nonesuch Records on February 24, 2017. The record includes nine original songs Giddens wrote or co-wrote while she and her band toured after Tomorrow Is My Turn's 2015 release, along with a traditional song and two civil rights-era songs, "Birmingham Sunday" and Staple Singers' well-known "Freedom Highway," from which the album takes its name. Rhiannon Giddens (born February 21, 1977) is an American musician. She is a founding member of the country, blues and old-time music band Carolina Chocolate Drops, where she is the lead singer, violinist, and banjo player. Giddens is a native of Greensboro, North Carolina, an alumna of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, and a 2000 graduate of Oberlin Conservatory at Oberlin College, where she studied opera.
Rhiannon Giddens’ second album Freedom Highway fulfils the promise that has been evident since in her part in the first Carolina Chocolate Drops album back in 2006. Her debut album Tomorrow Is My Turn (2015), together with the Record Store Day Factory Girl EP, more than amply demonstrated her compelling ability to interpret a wide range of both covers (of songs originally performed, and mostly written, by women) and traditional songs, with just a glimpse of her emerging songwriting ability
The music industry usually rolls out new albums with in-store performances at record shops, high-profile media appearances or buzzworthy kickoff concerts. But when Nonesuch Records released Freedom Highway, the new album by the folk singer Rhiannon Giddens, on Feb. 24, the occasion was marked by Ms. Giddens and her backing band’s spending a day in a far more sobering environment: the Sing Sing Correctional Facility. From left, the inmates Hector DeJesus, left, and Shaquan Dunkin during the workshop session in the chapel on Friday afternoon.
Freedom Highway draws upon deep American traditions, and while its form may be a throwback, it speaks to a time when the phrase "Black Lives Matter" can be seen as controversial and, in doing so, it illustrates how these issues are deeply ingrained in American life and cannot be forgotten. Always ambitious, l folk artist Rhiannon Giddens uses Freedom Highway, her second solo album, for a contemporary end: tracing the roots of the movement from plantation property to today.
Courtesy of the artist. I was young, but not for long," sings Rhiannon Giddens in the voice of one of the characters she brings to bloody life on her second solo album, Freedom Highway. Actually, she wails the line – in grief, in defiance, and with the laser-deadly accuracy of a singer whose art is steeped in the subversive theatrics of Paul Robeson, the prophetic folk of Odetta and the psychological inquiries of Stephen Sondheim.
