The English Renaissance was a cultural and artistic movement in England dating from the late 15th century to the early 17th century. It is associated with the pan-European Renaissance that is usually regarded as beginning in Italy in the late 14th century. As in most of the rest of northern Europe, England saw little of these developments until more than a century later

The English Renaissance was a cultural and artistic movement in England dating from the late 15th to the early 17th century. Like most of northern Europe, England saw little of these developments until more than a century later. The beginning of the English Renaissance is often taken, as a convenience, to be 1485, when the Battle of Bosworth Field ended the Wars of the Roses and inaugurated the Tudor Dynasty. The dominant art forms of the English Renaissance were literature and music. Visual arts in the English Renaissance were much less significant than in the Italian Renaissance. The English period began far later than the Italian, which is usually considered to begin in the late 14th century, and was moving into Mannerism and the Baroque by the 1550s or earlier.

England was not an exceptional country, only here the Renaissance began somewhat later than, for instance, in Italy, but, as in any land, it meant the whole change in art, thought and temper, which recreated the European mind. The English Renaissance of literature only came in full flower during the last twenty years of the XVI century, later than in any Southern land, but it was all the richer for delay. The two forces, which were the cause of such a flourishing, were the political settlement, culminating in the later reign of Elizabeth, and the religious settlement, when the Anglican Church. Having that uncommonly high opinion of himself as a king, James had a very low opinion of Parliament as a power that audaciously wanted to control him.

A Selection of Renaissance Music. The musical Renaissance is usually taken to begin with the generation of Gilles Binchois (. 400-1460) and Guillaume Dufay (1397-1474), although most of the 15th century is placed in the medieval period by some historians. Alongside Spain, England continued to be old-fashioned in its style of polyphony, also working almost exclusively in the sacred domain. The early 16th century saw the high point of the unique English liturgical style, known for wide sonorities and abstract soaring lines. The polyphonic style of the late Renaissance was perfected in the music of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (. 525-1594), Orlando di Lasso (or Lassus) (1532-1594), and William Byrd (1543-1623). These three form the dominant trio of the later Renaissance, in parallel with Dufay, Ockeghem and Josquin in the early Renaissance.
