Charles Dutoit's 25 year term as music director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra produced many outstanding recordings of late 19th and 20th Century music, and this one matches the standard of their best. The sound is everything you would expect from a Decca recording made in St Eustache - warm, clear and detailed with bite in the brass, depth in the lower strings and percussion which is visceral without obscuring the rest of the orchestra, and it really sounds like a large orchestra. I've heard many recordings of An American in Paris and Rhapsody in Blue and these are as good as any. This is the first recording I've heard of the Porgy and Bess Symphonic Picture and it offers some of the opera's favourites - Summertime is played softly by strings followed by a banjo-led I Got Plenty O’ Nuttin’ building to a swaggering It Ain't Necessarily So and full orchestral finale.
