It's this last feature that I'll focus on here, giving you a rundown of just a few of their recent releases, most of which have a pretty feel involving minimal production. He put them on a vinyl-only album called What Got Over, and offered it as a Record Store Day special. And enjoy one more Dom Flemons original in the player below! Dom Flemons performs "Too Long (I've Been Gone). Disclaimer: as always, the opinions I express on this blog are my own, and don't reflect my role in the government.
Dominique Flemons (born August 30, 1982) is an American old-time music, Piedmont blues, and neotraditional country t, singer, and songwriter. He is a proficient player of the banjo, fife, guitar, harmonica, percussion, quills, and rhythm bones. He is known as "The American Songster" as his repertoire of music spans nearly a century of American folklore, ballads, and tunes.
Dom Flemons’ versatility is undeniable and traversing musical mountains is second nature to the American Songster. The What Got Over EP is a musical journey and that takes you from ancient fife and drum music to classic Piedmont blues and then to Clock on the Wall, a tune that touches on the earliest and rawest form of rock and roll. The amplified harmonica squeals and moans behind Flemons’ heart wrenching vocals. Get a free download of the entire album, What Got Over EP here.
Dom Flemons is a native Arizonan and a true modern Songster, engaging audiences from the green Carolinas to the ruddy Southwest with personalized interpretations of folk, blues, early jazz and rock, country, and original material. Where else can you hear Ma Rainey, the Beatles and the Band in one pyrotechnic set? Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Dom is a consummate showman, dazzling audiences with his slide banjo technique and animated presentation.

Years in the making, Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Dom Flemons’ historically rich new album, Black Cowboys, is finally out. The album, which is on the Smithsonian Folkways Recordings label, pays tribute to the music, culture, and complex history of the Wild West. The songs and poems featured on the album take the listener on an illuminating journey from the trails to the rails of the Old West, the label explains
New album from Flemons is out March 2. First inspired by his family’s roots in the region, Flemons, known for both his solo work and as a founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, chronicles the rich, deep history of Black music in the American west, a history that has often been ignored or white-washed despite its massive contribution to the canon of American music. Songs on the album include beloved standards like Home On The Range and Going Down The Road Feelin’ Bad, as well as original songs like One Dollar Bill and He’s A Lone Ranger. We did the session over a few days and two of the tracks were featured on the final album ( One Dollar Bill, Texas Easy Street ). As for the rest of the album, I wanted to keep things stripped down and chose my cast of characters wisely. I featured two young musicians who I have worked with for the past several years.
