In economics and business administration literature, David A. Schon introduced the notion of bootlegging in 1963. It usually is a bottom-up, non-programmed activity, without the official permission of the responsible management, but for the benefit of the company. It is not in the department’s action plan nor are there any formal resources allocated towards it (Augsdorfer 1996).

Bootlegging’s vinyl belle époque began 45 years ago this summer with Great White Wonder by Bob Dylan and The Band. Within a year, rock’n’roll was teeming with bootleg LPs and, for many enthusiasts, they remained essential complements to official releases for over a decade. Legitimate labels responded with allegations that the mafia was behind bootlegging. Organised crime was certainly involved in counterfeiting – making fake copies of legal releases.

Bootleg beats - various artists. Bootleg Beats" takes classic KPM tracks by Hawkshaw, Mansfield, Pearson etc. and gives them the remix treatment. Some of you may view this as being sacrilegious but in my opinion the results are pretty good, especially the mixes by The Karminsky Experience and Si Begg. Library music has been used as sample fodder for many years so it's good to hear the original material placed at the forefront here.

Blank album covers and labels were commonplace in the early years of bootlegging; the album was often identified only by a photocopied page inside the shrink wrap listing the artist and songs, occasionally including a photograph or two. 1970s and 1980s.

The late New York Dolls guitarist Johnny Thunders made the live BOOTLEGGING THE BOOTLEGGERS to head actual bootleggers off at the pass. With goofy-voiced introductions from Thunders himself, the songs are a shambling mess of tossed-off acoustic poetry, druggy R&B, and gutter rock & roll. In addition to a few covers, like the Stones’s As Tears Go By and the surf classic Wipeout, are the New York Dolls standard Personality Crisis as well as Thunders originals

Always wondered where this remix of Go DJ came from, after only ever hearing it one set which was East Connection @ Sidewinder Bonfire Bonanza 2002. I thought it must be at least semi-official somehow because it was so well done. Not just a case of cutting individual beats like with a lot of the other tunes that were being bootlegged at the time, some serious work has gone into this as the bassline is never on its own in the original and a whole new melody has been created. There are also extra beats added on top which makes this more of a remix in my eyes, far too good to just call it a a bootleg. Massive props to whoever is responsible for this rework, 1 of the best from this era in my eyes
