Trip was an album that happened because of Mike Stern's relentless determination to remain Mike Stern. On July 3, 2016, he was hailing a cab when he tripped over some concealed construction debris, broke both arms, and was taken to the hospital. He fractured both humerus bones and was left with significant nerve damage in his right hand, preventing him from accomplishing even the simplest of tasks - including holding a guitar pick.

He broke both shoulders when he tripped running across a street in Manhattan. Trip, his upcoming 2017 release is his stunning return after multiple surgeries and a lot of gumption. More than just a comeback, this album is about Mike's career and his musical partnerships which Mike loving refers to 'as a trip'

Mike Stern (born January 10, 1953) is an American jazz guitarist. After playing with Blood, Sweat & Tears, he worked with drummer Billy Cobham, then with trumpeter Miles Davis from 1981 to 1983 and again in 1985. He then began a solo career, releasing more than a dozen albums. Stern was named Best Jazz Guitarist of 1993 by Guitar Player magazine.
