Lili Boulanger died in 1918 at the age of 24, and though for most of the 20th century her reputation was dwarfed by that of her elder sister, conductor and teacher Nadia, Lili's music is now coming into its own. John Eliot Gardiner's recording of the three choral psalm settings and the hypnotic Vieille Prière follow Yan Pascal Tortelier's Boulanger disc for Chandos, which included Psalms 24 and the massive 130. Gardiner gives the music a sinewy strength, emphasising its ritualistic quality; there are traces of both Debussy and early Stravinsky in Boulanger's writing but th. .
After Du Fond de l'Abime take some pause before turning to that other masterpiece, the Symphony of Psalms by Igor Stravinsky. I won't dwell on the sad details of Lili's life but suffice is to say that at 19 she won the Prix de Rome and these Psalms were written during her year-long stay at the Villa Medici, in 1916.
Psalms 24 and 130 have already been impressively recorded by Yan Pascal Tortelier (Chandos); but John Eliot Gardiner, the Monteverdi Choir and the London Symphony Orchestra take on all three, plus the exotic and hypnotic Vieille prière bouddhique, creating outstanding performances of these constructions gigantesques. The knack is to give the illusion of these works belonging very much to their own time (think back to Debussy’s St Sebastien, think ahead to Messiaen) – and yet belonging to no time.
