Neo-medieval music is a modern popular music characterized by elements of Medieval music and early music in general. Music styles within neo-medieval music vary from authentic performance interpretations of Medieval music (understood as Classical music) to crossover genres that blend Medieval instruments, such as bagpipe, shawm and hurdy-gurdy with electronic music and rock. In many cases, it is more or less overlapping with styles such as folk rock, British folk rock and neofolk.
The Grammy Award for Best Classical Crossover Album was awarded from 1999 to 2011. The award was discontinued from 2012 in a major overhaul of Grammy categories. Basically, the Best Classical Crossover Album category will disappear. If a classical crossover release is a non-classical artist making a classical album it should be entered in the appropriate classical category
Adaro was a German medieval folk rock band active from 1997 to 2006. Their first CD, Stella Splendens, was based mainly on Spanish songs from the 13th and 14th century. The later works incorporated late medieval songs from the Minnesang tradition by artists such as Hans Sachs, Walther von der Vogelweide and Oswald von Wolkenstein.
Experimental/Post Metal. Adaro biography German act ADARO was formed in 1997, initially consisting of Christoph Pelgen, Konstanze Kulinsky, Jrgen Treyz, Ulli Stoltz, Susan Hurll-Bastian, Herbert Wachter and Rolf Kersting. With Spanish mediaval folk music as their main sources of inspiration, their debut album was issued in the fall of the same year; "Stella Splendens". Adaro signed for SPV Records soon after; and when their third album "Minnenspiel" was issued in 2002 they had modernized their sound; moving away from clearly defined folk territories. The line-up remained mostly unchanged for this production; with the only minor change being that drummer Bielefeldt did not participate on this release. Adaro's fourth album, "Schlaraffenland", was released in 2004. An expanded version of their 1999 EP "Words Never Spoken" was also issued this year.

This album mixes traditional lyrics with Medieval Latin songs and many originals, retelling Till’s tale for a new generation. It brings the hard work of the first three albums beautifully to fruition. To discern the influence Ougenweide had on this scene, consider that it was the first German rock band to arrange Palastinalied, a song from the Crusades by Walther von Vogelweide. Since then, most of the important groups in German medieval rock, including Adaro, Corvus Corax, Qntal, and others, have followed suit, recording their own arrangements of the song
In Medieval Crossover, Barbara Newman highlights the ways in which the premodern reader understood 'sacred' and 'secular' not as opposing points on a continuum but as what Newman calls a state of 'double judgment,' where transcendent truths could be understood through paradox or hermeneutic inversion. Exquisitely written, grounded in thoughtful readings of some of the most enigmatic texts of the Middle Ages, Medieval Crossover charts a new course in our understanding of premodern modes of interpretation. Suzanne Conklin Akbari, University of Toronto. The strengths of Medieval Crossover are manifold. This is essential reading for students of history, religion, literature, and cultural studies, with sensitive English translations catering to readers who lack proficiency in Latin or Medieval French.
