Greatest Hits, also titled Garth Brooks i. .The Life of Chris Gaines, is an album by American country music artist Garth Brooks, in which Brooks assumes the fictitious persona of Australian rock artist Chris Gaines. Originally, this album was intended to be the soundtrack for a movie called The Lamb that would star Brooks as a rock star recalling the different periods of his life.

When Brooks' new persona and his album was revealed to the public, they were unforgiving - they didn't think that he was playing a role, they simply though he'd lost his mind. Granted, the story behind Chris Gaines - both the invented biography and the reasons why Brooks decided to become Gaines - is more interesting than the record itself. Instead of encapsulating mainstream pop from the mid-'80s through the end of the '90s, thereby sounding like a true "greatest hits," it's basically the state of adult pop at the close of the '90s.

In 1999, Garth Brooks ditched his cowboy hat, donned a wig, grew a soul patch and took on a fictional R&B rock star persona. While this was hardly a new concept (Sgt. Pepper, Ziggy Stardust, et., what made it unique was that Garth was slated to play this character, Chris Gaines, in a then-upcoming fictional biopic called THE LAMB. In the years since, Chris Gaines has become the butt of many jokes, perhaps most notably on an episode of "Family Guy" (though the album doesn't include the hidden bonus track that Stewie refers to). Can't quite figure out why the disc was so poorly received. It's not even cited in the discography on his official site.

28, 1999, Brooks released the album, Garth Brooks. In the Life of Chris Gaines. It confused the hell out of people. For starters, the cover of the album just said "Chris Gaines Greatest Hits. You might remember it. It's the one with a brooding, soul-patched, bangs-covered, eye-shadowed face resembling Brooks. Chris Gaines and his rebellious friend Tommy started a rock band in 1985 Los Angeles during their high school years. The band, called Crush, played local clubs until eventually getting their big break. After gaining some fame, Tommy dies in a plane crash, completely shattering Gaines. Gaines, who never had the approval of his father, set out to make a solo record which sold 12 million copies. That's probably the first absurdity in the whole story).

Garth Brooks didn't simply put out Chris Gaines' purported debut album-he released a Gaines greatest hits compilation  . Meanwhile, in the 1999 NBC special Garth Brook. n the Life of Chris Gaines, he stopped pretending Gaines was real, which completely blurred the lines on what exactly fans were supposed to think of the whole thing.

Has Garth Brooks been keeping something stashed under his cowboy hat all these years, waiting for the right moment to let his Yankee freak flag fly? Garth Brooks. This greatest-hits album for the fictional rock star Chris Gaines is supposedly the opening salvo in a multimedia campaign that will include a yet-to-be-filmed movie called The Lamb
