Even in the increasingly multicultural western musical landscape of the 1990s, Natacha Atlas has more right than most to claim multiculturalism. Her toasting has also been an integral element in the success of . trance-techno group Transglobal Underground, and on her debut album, she continues and extends all those aspects of her personality.

Natacha Atlas captures an ethereal, otherworldly sound that renders even symphonic backup impotent in comparison with her insistent, vibrato-laden vocals. Meshing North African tonalities with transcendent orchestration, Atlas is helping to define a new world music that relies equally on Techno tricks and indigenous folk forms. A lead singer for the TransGlobal Underground for years, Atlas struck out on her own in 1995 with the album Diaspora, and has cut several CDs since. As her career grows, Atlas' lovely voice will no doubt mature, as will her wide-ranging stylistic interests  .

Atlas' debut solo album, Diaspora, released in 1995, featured accompaniment by Tunisian singer/songwriter Walid Rouissi and Egyptian composer and oud player Essam Rashad. Halim followed in 1997 and Gedida in 1999. Atlas worked with soundtrack composer David Arnold on the score of the Kurt Russell film Stargate. The career-spanning Best of Natacha Atlas was released in 2005 and a year later the sentimental Mish Maoul appeared as an homage to the music she heard while being raised in Morocco. After an extended recording absence, Ms. Atlas returned with Mounqaliba on the Six Degrees imprint in 2010.
