JJ Grey & Mofro (formerly Mofro) is an American Southern soul-rock band from Jacksonville, Florida. The early days of Mofro can be traced back to the mid-nineties when John Higginbotham aka "JJ Grey" and Daryl Hance signed with a United Kingdom label and played shows in Europe as Mofro Magic. Grey and Hance met in their hometown of Jacksonville, Florida while working for an air conditioning company and developed a friendship through music.

Not that JJ Grey and his ever evolving backing band Mofro care. But it's possible that Georgia Warhorse may be the record that pulls them from the glorified cult status they've enjoyed for a decade into the lights on the mainstream's fringes - but don't count on it. Grey's music is far too gritty; too poetically, sonically, and atmospherically rooted in vintage Southern soul, rock and blues traditions to translate readily into radio fodder.

On his fifth album, this exponent of Memphis-via-Muscle Shoals R&B matches Tony Joe White’s moody charisma with Otis Redding’s lovelorn élan. Grey does it with a sparse yet poetic songwriting touch and a feel for serpentine rhythms. As a singer, he proves himself adept at both warm-hearted testimonies ( Beautiful World, King Hummingbird ) and snarling put-downs ( The Hottest Spot In Hell ). Grey is especially good at seductive numbers - Slow, Hot & Sweaty is exactly what its title indicates.

Georgia Warhorse will empty, evert and cleanse your soul. Then it'll hand it back to you shiny and new. But unlike, say, Blackwater (so love that drumming!!!), this one had to grow on me.
