Science Fiction is the fifth studio album by American rock band Brand New, released on August 17, 2017 through Procrastinate! Music Traitors. The album is the band's first in eight years since 2009's Daisy. The album's title and track listing were officially revealed on August 17, 2017 after several weeks of speculation, hints and leaks, with its physical release on October 20, 2017.

Science Fiction doesn’t provide much joy beyond its mordant humor, but using the acidic feel of old Brand New as a counterpoint, it resonates longer, has more gravitas, and carries the weight of earned wisdom.

Comparing this album to prior albums is certainly one way to go, but as a band these guys have not been inclined to chase the sound of former hits or to attempt to re-litigate tales told prior. So I won't try to describe how this differs from The Devil & God or how it sounds like Daisy

Brand New's 'Science Fiction' Is a Dizzying, Legend-Making (and Potentially Career-Closing) Album. 8/18/2017 by Chris Payne. After eight years of public speculation, message board sleuthing and amateur detective work, Brand New’s fifth studio album is finally a real, tangible thing. Science Fiction surprised us, but it’s not a surprise album, at least not in the 2017 music industry definition of the term. There were no pop-up shops or thirst-heavy viral stunts. Zane Lowe didn’t premiere a song on his Apple Music show and hell, the album isn’t even up on streaming services.

When Brand New fans contact you, what do they inquire about most often? Fans primarily inquire about purchasing the photo, and about the meaning of the photo. They ask me where the image was shot (which I don’t disclose out of respect to the current owners). When I asked her about it she texted me the following: Brand New fans feel very emotionally connected to the music. The album art contributes a lot to the music's meaning, so by simply being in the photo, I feel like I’m contributing to an emotion felt by fans. I consider myself a small part of the vehicle to help people learn more about themselves and what they love, which is a real honor.
