Wheels" is The String-A-Longs' biggest hit single, a success in 1961. Their debut release, it was issued in 1960. The tune peaked at on the Billboard Hot 100 and was the number 8 single of 1961 according to Billboard. The track reached number 8 in the UK Singles Chart. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. The tune was composed as "Tell the World" by Stephens and Torres of the String-A-Longs, who were then called the Leen Teens.

The String-A-Longs' innovative four guitar line-up enabled an interesting rhythmic counterpoint to be added to the melody, and their use of Magnatone amplifiers gave the band a fresh and appealing sound. With its measured, leisurely tempo Wheels had a sort of stately grace - the String-A-Longs didn't so much rock'n'roll as glide and stroll and the disc had an endearing unique charm. But once a tune has achieved such widespread fame and a band such sudden success, they both become prey to any number of likely predators.

There’s been some interesting discussion recently in The Sound Machine on the subject of that enduring prog-rock band Caravan and what might be considered their best album. I was first introduced to the band shortly after the release of their self titled debut album from 1968 when a school mate of mind lent me his copy. It soon hit me just what a terrific album it is with the haunting opening track Place Of My Own still sitting highly on my list of all time fave songs.
