In Ghana the people do not play the big cassette (vinyl), nobody has the players so the old people throw away the records because they are useless. The LP is titled "Modern Ghanaians" since it is, according to Ayisoba: "the best presentation of what my music and style is about. King Ayisoba is a star in Ghana. His kologo sounds melodic and percussive at the same time and with Panji Anoff, his producer, he changed the Accra music scene by using traditional instruments together with the hip life (a style that emerged in Ghana in the mid-90s and contains hip hop and dancehall elements) beats, bleeps and bass.

King Ayisoba, a latterday Ghanaian musical icon, is similarly sweeping on ‘Africa Needs Africa’, the opening track of 1000 Can Die, his fifth album. De Boer has released two previous King Ayisoba albums, Modern Ghanaians and Wicked Leaders, on his Makkum imprint, as well as a multi-artist compilation, 2016’s outstanding This Is Kologo Power!. Check this Prince Buju cut from the latter for the killerest punk blues frying pan to the face you ever did hear.

King Ayisoba and his band know that traditional instruments are stronger than anything modern, says album producer Zea (the Ex’s Arnold de Boer). Playing them is a gift from God. They’ll take what they can use from electronica, from hiplife (the hugely popular Ghanaian style that fuses the local highlife music with hip-hop) but they won’t let it beat them, because they know what they have is more powerful. Their music is pulled from the ground. He also had a song called Modern Ghanaians that said we shouldn’t forget the tradition. Instead we should use it to fight modern problems. With that mantra, King Ayisoba became the unlikeliest star. King Ayisoba – vocals, kologo Abaadongo Adontanga – dancer, backing vocals, dorgo Ayuune Sulley - Sinyaka, backing vocals Gemeka Abobe Azure – guluku & dundun drums Ayamga Francis – Djembe & Bemne drums.
