There are 20 reeds on the harmonica-10 on the blow (exhale) reed plate and 10 on the draw (inhale). Both reed plates are attached (commonly via screws) to a comb (commonly made of wood). Note that the hump of the tongue, where the constriction point is found, has not moved much further back than that of the 3 Draw Whole Step Bend in Figure 15, but the tongue in the anterior chamber has lowered to create a more concave, or scooped shape, and thus the larger chamber needed for this lower-pitched bend is created. Creating this scooped shape can be a key element in bending low notes/reeds. I recommend students looking to deepen their bends (commonly on holes 3, 2 and 1 on the A Harmonica and below) experiment with this scooped shape.

There are roughly three types of harmonica: Chromatic – this harmonica has a bar that is activated by a button the player pushes and the button redirects air from the hole in the mouthpiece to the selected plate. It can be used for any style of music, but is not recommended for beginners. Diatonic – this is the classic blues harp and rock harmonica, the one you need to get if you want to learn how to play harmonica. Tremolo – this one has two reeds per note, one is faintly sharp and the other faintly flat. The sound this harmonica produces is somewhat warbling. Their most popular album, Get a Grip (1993) includes hits such as Crazy, Cryin’ and Amazing – three songs who have defined the ‘90’s. In 1997 they’ve made a comeback with their Nine Lives album and their first single Pink which offers one of the most memorable and popular harmonica intro. Steven Tyler is truly a great harmonica player.

Harmonica experts usually recommend beginners to start with the basic 10-hole diatonic harp tuned in to the key of C before graduating to the challenging chromatic that uses the standard 12-tone scale. Diatonic harmonicas are majorly used for blues, rock, and folk, but if you want to play on any scale, on any key, the chromatic harp is the best option. Chromatic harmonicas are mostly used for jazz, pop, and classical music. Some of the best-known chromatic harmonica players include Stevie Wonder, Larry Adler and Toots Thielemans.

A reed is a thin strip of material that vibrates to produce a sound on a musical instrument. Most woodwind instrument reeds are made from Arundo donax ("Giant cane") or synthetic material. Tuned reeds (as in harmonicas and accordions) are made of metal or synthetics. Musical instruments are classified according to the type and number of reeds.

The extra three lower reeds. its like it says on the box, Two Harps in On. .While great overall, one especially nice thing to my ear: On many diatonic harmonica models, the 3-blow does doesn't seem to have the same "punch" as the 2-draw. On the Lucky 13, that 3-blow (both the Low 3 and the regular 3) sound and feel just as soulful as the 2-draw. Thanks again for this design, East Top's quality and attention to detail, Roland's nice customer service, and for pitching this harmonica at SPAH.

Like the paper clip, harmonica reeds are bent back and forth hundreds of times per second. Eventually, they will suffer the fate of your paper clip. Take a second paperclip and bend it back and forth, but not as sharply as you did the first time. Notice that it takes longer to break. When you play hard, the harmonica is louder because the reeds are swinging farther as they go back and forth than if you were playing lightly. Like the first paper clip you bent sharply, reeds played hard will go out much faster. Not only do your reeds go out faster, you lose tone.
