The Six Pieces for Piano, Op. 118, are some of the most beloved compositions that Johannes Brahms wrote for solo piano. Completed in 1893 and dedicated to Clara Schumann, the collection was the penultimate composition published during Brahms' lifetime. It was also his penultimate work composed for piano solo. Consistent with Brahms's other late keyboard works, Op. 118 is more introspective than his earlier piano pieces, which tended to be more virtuosic in character
Wilhelm Backhaus ('Bachaus' on some record labels) (26 March 1884 – 5 July 1969) was a German pianist and pedagogue. He was particularly well known for his interpretations of Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Chopin and Brahms. He was also much admired as a chamber musician. Born in Leipzig, Backhaus was the son of a well-known architect. He began learning piano at the age of four with his mother, an amateur pianist.

I love these pieces, especially Op 117, and I can't imagine them being played any better than recorded here in 1963 by Wilhelm Kempff on DG. As Brahms himself was described when he played these in his own room - "kostlich, melodios" - precious and tuneful. And indeed, as he said, these were the "lullabies for his sorrows". And if you haven't heard Kempff's 1950s mono recordings (not the 1960s stereo) of Beethoven's sonatas, you are missing an extraordinary contribution - easily on a par with Schnabel and Backhaus and IMO the best.
