Mel Tillis, left, presents Ronnie Milsap, center, his Album of the Year honor for "A Legend in My Time" at the nationally televised CMA Awards show at the Grand Ole Opry House Oct. 13, 1975. Helping Milsap on stage is his wife, Joyce, right. During the 1960s, Tillis became one of Nashville's go-to writers. Songs like "Ruby (Don't Take Your Love to Town)," "Mental Revenge" and "Detroit City," among others, became country classics, and have been recorded by dozens of artists in the past half-century. Brenda Lee took "Emotions," written by Tillis and Ramsey Kearney, to No. 7 on the pop charts in 1961. Tillis earned his first charting country single in 1958 when he recorded The Violet and a Rose for Columbia.

Lonnie Melvin Tillis (August 8, 1932 – November 19, 2017) was an American country music singer and songwriter. Although he recorded songs since the late 1950s, his biggest success occurred in the 1970s, with a long list of Top 10 hits. Tillis' biggest hits include "I Ain't Never", "Good Woman Blues", and "Coca-Cola Cowboy". On February 13, 2012, President Barack Obama awarded Tillis the National Medal of Arts for his contributions to country music.

Mel Tillis, who earned a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame and a National Medal of Arts as a singer and writer of enduring songs like Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town, and who was equally known for the stutter he employed to humorous and self-deprecating effect onstage, died on Sunday in Ocala, Fla. He was 85. Mr. Tillis had battled intestinal issues since early 2016 and never fully recovered, his publicist, Don Murry Grubbs, said in a statement. The suspected cause of death was respiratory failure, he said.
