Stewart then released 24 Carrots ( US 1980) and his first live album Live/Indian Summer ( US 1981), with both featuring backing by Peter White's band Shot in the Dark (who released their own unsuccessful album in 1981). While "24 Carrots" did produce a No. 24 single with "Midnight Rocks", the album sold less well than its two immediate predecessors. After those releases, Stewart was dropped by Arista and his popularity declined. In a 23 June 2012 telephone interview with Bob Reid and Blair Packham on NewsTalk 1010 AM in Toronto, Ontario (partially transcribed below), Al Stewart provided these insights into his songwriting "process": I don't like repetition. For example, there have been nine songs in the Top Ten, I think, called "Hold On" (Including, I think, once there were two called "Hold On" simultaneously in the Top Ten).

Al Stewart songs are fused with vivid creative imagery fueled by thoughtful lyrics, original melodic ideas, and one of classic rock's most unique voices. The album Modern Times was released with an alternate cover in the United States as opposed to the United Kingdom release. cover displayed Al Stewart sitting in a car owned by Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin. The record was released in 1980 and featured Al Stewart’ brand new band Shot In The Dark. The single Midnight Rocks, reached the number 30 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. 2 – Time Passages. As we mentioned before, following up a song and album like Year Of The Cat must have been a very daunting task for Al Stewart.
Joining forces with Shot in the Dark - a band led by Peter White, who had played guitar on Stewart's albums since Year of the Cat - Stewart recorded 24 Carrots, another sumptuous soft rock album. Released in 1980, it boasted an adult contemporary hit in "Midnight Rocks" - but it and its accompanying concert album, 1981's Live Indian Summer, effectively marked the end of Stewart's time as a hit-maker. Famous Last Words followed in 1993, after which Stewart and White parted ways. For 1995's Between the Wars - a sweeping historical concept album - Stewart initiated a partnership with guitarist Laurence Juber, who'd previously played in Wings. A concept album about wine, Down in the Cellar, arrived in 2000, followed by A Beach Full of Shells in 2005. Three years later, he released Sparks of Ancient Light. In 2009, Stewart released the live Uncorked, which featured guitarist Dave Nachmanoff.
