It is the third film in the Blair Witch series and a direct sequel to the 1999 film The Blair Witch Project, ignoring the events of its 2000 follow-up film Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, given the events of that film being a film within a film.

Conceived as a mix tape made by Joshua Leonard, one of the three film students making the Blair Witch documentary, the album features fittingly dark songs by Front Line Assembly, Skinny Puppy, Lydia Lunch and the Afghan Whigs. As a bonus, the CD features exclusive footage that was not included in the final version of the movie.
