Väsen is a Swedish folk music band from Uppsala originally consisting of Olov Johansson (nyckelharpa), Mikael Marin (viola) and Roger Tallroth (guitar). Later André Ferrari (percussion) also joined the group. As of 2019 they have released 19 albums, featured on others, and have toured every year also outside of Europe. Since 2002, however, performances outside Sweden have tended to not include André Ferrari, owing to his reluctance to tour internationally and the economic advantage of a trio.

The original quartet recording, adding percussionist André Ferrari to Väsen's trio sound becomes greater than the sum of its parts. This landmark 1997 recording changed the face of Swedish folk music forever, and brought the band international acclaim.

Väsen went on to adopt Nordman bassist Johan Granstrom and percussionist Andre Ferrari, and played as Vasen V for a couple of years, working out arrangements, making demos, and even preparing to record an album. But as rehearsals for the album began, Granstrom departed, leaving the quartet to record their 1997 release, titled Whirled in the . and Varldens Väsen in Sweden. Three Väsen demos were released on the . Opting for an assortment of percussion instruments over a standard kit, Ferrari brought a range of timbres and textures to the music.
This 1997 album was their American debut. 1997's Whirled, also put out by NorthSide, garnered a lot of critical attention and helped introduce Väsen to the American public. Gront, the band's sixth album, was released in 1999.

Väsen is a Swedish word with many meanings: spirit, noise, a living being, essence among the most prominent. It was originally meant to just be an album title, but soon people were calling to book the band "Väsen" and the name stuck. In 1997 the quartet goes into the studio and records "Varldens Väsen" ("Whirled" in North America). Tours of Norway, Denmark, Finland, Italy, France, the United States and Canada follow, as does a Swedish Grammy and two appearances on the national radio program "A Prairie Home Companion" in the . In 1999 the band releases their sixth CD, "Gront.
