The Beat formed in 1979 by Paul Collins, drummer of Los Angeles power pop legends The Nerves, whose "Hanging On The Telephone" became a hit for Blondie. The Beat's 1979 self-titled debut album on Columbia continued in the vein of the Nerves and is considered one of power pops greats. Following their second album, 1981's The Kids Are the Same, the band, now calling themselves Paul Collins' Beat to avoid confusion with the UK ska band, splintered after they were dropped from their label. They regrouped with a new lineup and harder sound for To Beat Or Not To Beat.
Paul Vincent Collins (born 1956, New York City) is an American writer, author, music producer, and t. He is best known for his work in the power pop groups The Nerves, The Breakaways and The Beat. Paul Collins has released several solo projects with his alternative country group The Paul Collins Band, who play Americana music inspired by country rock and folk rock.

Power pop lifer Collins more than backs up his album's boastful title on this most welcome - and deserving - victory la. Back stateside after decamping to Spain for 2005's contemplative Flying High, and teaming up with down 'n' dirty garage guru Jim Diamond, King of Power Pop! finds Collins so desirous to make up for lost time that he practically runs out the door, all a-jangle and pleasantly raspy, on the opening blast of "C'mon Let's Go!". He tears through the barroom stomp of "Do You Wanna Love Me?" and the self-explanatory "Doin' It for the Ladies" and "Don't Blame Your Troubles on Me", which sounds like a long-lost Nerves track
Paul Collins set out on a solo career, recording the self-titled Paul Collins album in 1992. This country/rock album included special guests such as Greg Kihn, Cyril Jordan (from Flamin Groovies), Jeff Trott (Sheryl Crow), Chuck Prophet, Dave Immergluck (Counting Crows) and key members of Chris Isaak’s band. 1993 brought the sophomore release by Paul Collins Band, entitled From Town To Town. The album was recorded with Arty Lenin of The Flashcubes, Rick Wagner and Will Rigby of The db’s and Billy Fica of Television. Now some 3000 members strong, Paul books shows all over the United States, Canada and Europe.
Paul Collins is a power pop lifer. Fresh out of college, he moved to California and joined the Nerves with Peter Case (later of the Plimsouls) and Jack Lee. The Nerves only recorded one single during its career, but it was an influential one. You've definitely heard at least one track: "Hangin' On The Telephone," which Blondie covered on Parallel Lines. At the moment, the Paul Collins Beat is at the tail end of a month-long tour that's hit everywhere from Seattle to Carbondale. Tonight, June 24, the band pulls into the Demo with support from local buzzsaw-pop duo Bruiser Queen and Nashville band Sherbert. The show starts at 8:00 .
