Sussman Lawrence was the new wave pop band Himmelman led in his early days in Minneapolis, and they cut two self-released albums that earned the band a powerful reputation in the Midwest before Himmelman began embracing more serious themes and struck out as a solo act, with his former bandmates signing on as his backing band. 1979's Hail to the Modern Hero is packed with hooks, but also sounds more than a bit gimmicky, and Himmelman's vocal affectations are at their most obvious.

The Complete Sussman Lawrence (1979–1985) is the 2004 2CD reissue on Deep Shag Records of Sussman Lawrence's two rare indie albums-Hail to the Modern Hero! (1980) and Pop City (1984)-which includes four rare bonus tracks. As the singer, songwriter and guitarist for the band, this set contains the earliest recordings of Peter Himmelman

Sussman Lawrence was a band led by Peter Himmelman on lead vocals and guitar, with his cousin Jeff Victor on keyboards and backup vocals. Both had previously performed as the only white members in Minneapolis soul singer Alexander O'Neal's band. Heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley, Himmelman (who also performed with Shangoya where he added a 'rock-guitar' flavor to the Caribbean sound) brought a pronounced reggae/ska flavor to their debut album Hail To The Modern Hero! and then embellished it on the more polished and ambitiously pop-oriented follow up, the double LP Pop City.

Title: Hail the Conquering Hero (1944). Show HTML View more styles. Filmed and released during the darkest year of WWII, HERO is a smart, unjingoistic yet oddly patriotic comedy of the home front, and of our often short-sighted view of what makes a hero.
