That is the driving force behind Real Life's status as one of the post-punk era's major jump-off points. Punk's untethered energy is rigidly controlled, run through arrangements that are tightly wound, herky-jerky, unpredictable, proficiently dynamic.

Magazine released an album of new material, No Thyself, in October 2011, followed by a short UK tour. Following a British tour to promote their debut album Real Life (which made the UK Top 30), Jackson left Magazine in late July. He was replaced briefly by Paul Spencer, who performed with the band for gigs across Europe and some television appearances, including The Old Grey Whistle Test, where they played "Definitive Gaze". Spencer quit partway through the tour, joining the Speedometors shortly afterwards Magazine's second album, Secondhand Daylight, was release.

Songs like Shot by Both Sides and The Light Pours Out of Me are on countless punk compilations and are post punk staples. The overall sound on this album is amazing.

I was lucky enough to see Magazine at the Odeon in Birmingham in 78 as a 17 year old, when they still had live bands on stage at what is now a cinema.

Three years and four albums later, Magazine split up without scoring a single hit. By year-zero punk standards, their musical prowess made them practically prog-rock (they had a keyboardist, for God's sake), while Devoto's baleful egghead persona seemed specifically designed to repel listeners. What endures is the drama and dynamism of their best work.
