Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins is a jazz album by Duke Ellington and Coleman Hawkins that was recorded on August 18, 1962 and released in February 1963 by Impulse! Records. In 1995, The New York Times called it "one of the great Ellington albums, one of the great Hawkins albums and one of the great albums of the 1960s. All tracks composed by Duke Ellington, except where noted. Mood Indigo" (Duke Ellington, Barney Bigard) – 5:56. Ray Charles' Place" – 4:04.
Duke Ellington and Coleman Hawkins were both involved in unusual collaborations in the early 1960s, often with much younger musicians: Ellington with Max Roach and Charles Mingus (Money Jungle) and with John Coltrane; Hawkins with Roach and Sonny Rollins. As surprising as any of those inter-generational sessions, however, is this 1962 meeting between Ellington and Hawkins, if only because it hadn't happened before. This album was recorded for Impulse at Rudy van Gelder's Englewood Cliffs, NJ studio in a single session on August 18, 1962. This is one of Ellington's finest small group recordings in my opinion and as loyal I am to Ben Webster who had a lot to do with creating the Ellington sound, I love the contribution Coleman Hawkins makes to this recording. Recorded in August 1962, reDiscover Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins is according to the NY Times "one of the great albums of the 1960s". And then there’s the brilliance of Duke Ellington himself. He’s been called the Renaissance Man of jazz and while this album strays very little from what the composer and bandleader does best, it should not be overlooked. The New York Times was right. All true, and then some.
