Variations is a classical and rock fusion album. The music was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and performed by his younger brother, the cellist Julian Lloyd Webber. The Lloyd Webber brothers were always very close but their two different careers (a rock musical composer and a classical cellist) meant that a collaboration seemed unlikely. It was not until Julian beat his brother in a bet on a Leyton Orient football match that Andrew was forced to write his cello work.

The Lloyd Webber brothers were always very close but their two different careers (a rock musical composer and a classical cellist) meant that a collaboration seemed unlikely. As his subject, Andrew chose the theme of Paganini's 24th caprice and added 23 variations for cello and rock band.

Andrew Lloyd Webber has achieved great popular success in musical theatre, and has been referred to as "the most commercially successful composer in history. Several of his musicals have run for more than a decade both in the West End and on Broadway. He has composed 13 musicals, a song cycle, a set of variations, two film scores, and a Latin Requiem Mass.
Andrew Lloyd Webber? Shurely Shome Mishtake? But this is where you'd be wrong! Consider this as a Colosseum II album with special guests, and music pre-composed by a promising young composer who had already written the world's first Rock Opera proper (Jesus Christ Superstar), and had, in all likelihood, inspired The Who to write their opus "Tommy" with his first Rock Operetta "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat" . A dark swirling mass of keyboards in the introduction gives way to the statement of the Caprice and Variations 1-4, AKA the theme to the South Bank Show (long- running UK TV show).
The chromatic title theme of Lloyd Webber’s most famous musical is eerily similar to a certain riff from Pink Floyd’s song Echoes. The band’s bassist at the time, Roger Waters, never sought legal action, claiming that life’s too long to bother with suing Lloyd Webber. Some people have even pointed out similarities to the intro of Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. 7. The ‘Mirror Scene’ From ‘The Phantom of the Opera’.
