Kunta Kinte (c. 1750 – c. 1822; /ˈkuːntɑː ˈkɪnteɪ/ KOON-tah KIN-tay) is a character in the novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family by American author Alex Haley. According to Haley, Kunta Kinte was based on one of his ancestors: a Gambian man who was born in 1750, enslaved and taken to America and who died in 1822. The extent to which Kunta Kinte is based on fact is disputed.

As we learned when the actor visited Yahoo TV during his first-ever trip to New York to attend the Roots premiere screening at the Tribeca Film Festival, he’s surprised to see himself in the iconic role originated by LeVar Burton in the 1977 miniseries.

Roots will premiere on History on Memorial Day, airing over four consecutive nights at 9 . The four-night, eight-hour event series is a historical portrait of American slavery recounting the journey of one family and their will to survive and carry on their legacy.
