The Joan Baez Ballad Book was a 1972 compilation of traditional folk material, culled from Joan Baez' first five Vanguard albums. Initially issued as a two-record set, the two records were subsequently re-released separately a few years later as "Volume 1" and "Volume 2". Cover painting was by folk musician and painter Eric Von Schmidt
Taken en masse, the performances cement Baez's reputation as a premier interpreter of traditional song. Her signature sound is laid out here in all its simplicity: the haunting, crystalline soprano accompanied by sparse acoustic guitar. It is a pure sound, expertly applied to the tragic and idealistic tendencies packed inside the ballad form. Because the compilation is weighted exclusively towards the early folk songs, Joan Baez Ballad Book may not be the definitive Baez compilation

Joan Baez Volume 2 - Barbara Allen - Lily of the West - Old Blue - Railroad Boy - Silkie - Trees They Do Grow High - Wagoner's Lad. Rare, Live and Classic - Go 'Way from My Window. My record album has bitten the dust. This absolutely needs to be put on a CD. The folk songs are timeless and Joan sings them the way they were meant to be sung. 5 people found this helpful.
