Los Van Van is the most recognized post-revolution Cuban musical group, led for many years by bassist Juan Formell until his death in 2014. Formell and former band members Changuito and Pupy are some of the most important figures in contemporary Cuban music. In 1967, Formell became musical director of Elio Reve's charanga orchestra. The sound of Orquesta Revé at that time was a unique blend of Cuban son and late 60s rock.

Los Van Van has been a school for outstanding singers and musicians. Juan Formell contributed countless innovations to the Cuban bass and clave, which paved the way for a radical reconceptualisation of rhythmic arrangements in Cuban music. The Van Van sound came to be known as songo (based on the son rhythm, and still keeping its syncopation), which laid the base for the later development of timba.

Los Van Van's Llegó Van Van shows off their diverse, energetic sound once more. Produced by group leader Juan Formell and engineer Charlie Dos Santos, the band's first release on Havana Caliente features their spicy mix of timba, songo, charanga, salsa, jazz, and rock, and songs like "Permiso Que Llego Van Van" explain why they are still Cuba's most popular dance band.

One could argue that Los Van Van are the most important band in the history of modern Cuban dance music, if only for creating a sound that has conquered dancefloors the world over. At their inception in 1969, they were inspired to mix rock with Cuban Son, and throughout the '70s, they added trombones to a band that already featured violins, loads of percussion and drums, electric keyboards and bass, giving a contemporary Salsa flavor to their overall sound.
