The music on this album is all derived from scientific geological and meteorological data. In 1998, Densil Cabrera offered a set of tidal measurements he had "transcribed" into sound for sound artists to work with. John Duncan stepped up to the challenge. This first set (allegedly covering nearly 300 years of recorded tidal activity at 60 locations around Australia) was soon joined by a seismic set and a barometric set. Cabrera's sound sources follow meticulous rules of time compression, they are scientific audio representations of scientific data.

Densil Cabrera and I have yet to meet face-to-face. Our collaboration began in 1998, when Densil posted an offer to an audio chat list, open to anyone curious to hear and possibly work with tidal recordings he'd made. The Album's opening sustained tones subtly expand into interlacing fragments of purified sound. John Duncan was born in the United States, currently lives and works in Italy. His audio releases THE CRACKLING (1996 with Max Springer), TAP INTERNAL (2000), PALACE of MIND (2001 with Giuliana Stefani), FRESH (2002 with Zeitkratzer), INFRASOUND-TIDAL (2003) and THE KEENING TOWERS (2003) are all considered by critics and composers alike to be benchmarks in the field of experimental sound and contemporary music.

Alternative singer/songwriter Duncan Sheik premiered in mid-1996 when Atlantic released his self-titled debut album. With an appearance on the soundtrack to the TV hit ER, Sheik became somewhat well known in alternative circles. Born in 1970, Duncan Sheik grew up in South Carolina but spent many of his early years living with his grandparents in New Jersey. Inspired to play the piano while there, he later moved to electric guitar and performed in bands throughout high school. In 2009, Sheik released Whisper House, an album that offered his own version of highlights from Spring Awakening; it reached 181 on the Billboard Top 200. Sheik then released a collection of covers called Covers 80s in 2011 that he was intending to support with a tour, but as the album was released, he entered rehab for alcohol-related addiction.
