Centaurus A or NGC 5128 is a galaxy in the constellation of Centaurus. It was discovered in 1826 by Scottish astronomer James Dunlop from his home in Parramatta, in New South Wales, Australia. There is considerable debate in the literature regarding the galaxy's fundamental properties such as its Hubble type (lenticular galaxy or a giant elliptical galaxy) and distance (10–16 million light-years).

The NGC 5128 group is another famous group of galaxies in the southern hemisphere. There are several bright galaxies here - especially NGC 5128 and M83. NGC 5128 is the fifth brightest galaxy in the sky and one of the strangest looking galaxies in the nearby universe. Below - two large galaxies in the NGC 5128 group. NGC 4945 (left) is the second largest galaxy in this group and it is a spiral galaxy seen almost edge-on. M83 (right) is a very famous spiral galaxy seen face-on.

These two objects were both found in elliptical galaxies, NGC 5128 (also known as Centaurus A) shown here and NGC 4636. Both of these mysterious sources flare dramatically - becoming a hundred times brighter in X-rays in about a minute before steadily returning to their original X-ray levels about an hour later

From Earth, NGC 5128 appears like an elliptical or lenticular galaxy with a superimposed dust lane. The galaxy was included in Halton Arp’s Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies (1966). The blue regions toward the top are thought to be areas of star formation induced by powerful jets originating from a central black hole.
