Linda Thompson (née Pettifer, 23 August 1947) is an English folk rock singer. Thompson became one of the most recognised names and voices in the British folk rock movement of the 1970s and 1980s, in collaboration with her then husband and fellow British folk rock musician, guitarist Richard Thompson, and later as a solo artist. Born in Hackney, London, she moved with her family to Glasgow, Scotland, at the age of six. Actor Brian Pettifer is her brother.

Seventeen years later, she's found her voice again, and applied that rich, textured instrument to 10 new folk-pop songs largely unforgettable in their depth of human suffering. Exclusive discount for Prime members. Sample this album Artist (Sample).

Linda Thompson recorded seven brilliant Celtic-tinged albums in the ’70s and early ’80s with then-husband Richard, culminating in Shoot Out the Lights, one of the most devastating divorce albums ever recorded and a hallmark of British folk-rock music. An overly slick solo debut followed in 1985, and she promptly disappeared from sight, the victim of a stage fright so oppressive that she literally lost her voice. Accordingly, Fashionably Late, her first album in a very long 17 years, may be the most ironic album title of the year. Then again, it may simply be the best album of the year.

folk rock artist Linda Thompson will release "Fashionably Late," her first new studio album in 17 years, July 30 via Rounder. The album follows 1985's "One Clear Moment" (Warner Bros. and a pair of compilations - 1996's "Dreams Fly Away" (Hannibal) and last year's "Give Me a Sad Song" (Fledg'ling). Produced by Edward Haber (who compiled both retrospectives), "Fashionably Late" features several songs co-written with son and fellow singer/songwriter Teddy Thompson, while her daughter Kamila and ex-husband Richard both.

Linda Thompson's first recording in 17 years is a stunning brace of poetics and grace.

Better late than never indeed. The album starts with a surprise: former husband Richard plays guitar and sings on the chorus of the deceptively cheery folk-rocker Dear Mary. The moment is low-key, especially considering this is the woman who once bloodied her ex’s forehead with a microphone
