Edelman's main theme, "World of the Heart," will be instantly familiar to anyone who's seen a movie trailer in the last decade of so - a soaring melody that's equal parts grandeur and adventure, it's been recycled umpteen times over by films with none of the sword-and-sorcery elements of Dragonheart, but its all-purpose romanticism is undeniably potent.

Randy Edelman is one of a small group of film composers to whom I am grateful for not wasting his considerable talent in any other field of endeavor. This fine CD of the "Gettysburg" soundtrack makes clear how splendidly symphonic are the themes from this score. The main title-theme, depending on how it's presented and played, can depict exaltation, or sadness, or ferocity, or celebration, or dignitarian pomp, or an intimate recognition like love.

Love Me

I'm not really a fan of Randy Edelman. I hated his score for The Mask and his attempt at Ghostbusters II destroyed everything Elmer Bernstein accomplished in the first film. But 'Dragonheart' is the first and only time Edelman has ever impressed me.For this movie he created a wonderful, captivating fantasy theme that stamps over anything E.T. (as much as I like the score to that movie) has to offer. Even if you've not seen the film you've definitely heard the music as it has been used in many trailers and Oscar montages. The entire album is about 45 minutes and, sadly, the majority of it is uninspiring but it really does soar with tracks like 'World of the Heart', 'To the Stars', 'Bowen's Ride' and 'Finale' which will certainly be popular on the playlist of any serious film score fan. The Dragonheart series has endured over the years, with four movies in total (to date) and Edelman's theme has endured along with it. Mark McKenzie, known mainly as an orchestrator, took over from Edelman for these sequels and they are all equally worth it. The movies though have never been all that great, not terrible, but a far cry from the magic of other fantasy films of similar, or even lower, budget.The MCA album is completely out of chronological order, though if you can re-edit just one track and arrange it in the following order you will have the score in the correct sequence.1.
