Operation: Mindcrime is the third studio album by the American progressive metal band Queensrÿche. Originally released on May 3, 1988, the album was reissued on May 6, 2003 with two bonus tracks, and again in 2006 as a deluxe box set. A concept album and a rock opera, its story follows Nikki, a recovering drug addict who becomes disillusioned with the corrupt society of his time and reluctantly becomes involved with a revolutionary group as an assassin of political leaders.

Operation: Mindcrime. Progressive Heavy Queensrÿche. This is a concept album, with the story line concerning a hit man for the mob, and an ex-hooker who turned into a nun. Basically, the mob paid him to kill her, because she knew too much about their criminal organization. This is a long album, with 15 classic metal songs, to stretch out the story.
The story picks up with the identity of the killer revealed and Nikki's obsession with revenge on Operation: Mindcrime II. Cool eh? Maybe, maybe not; it depends on your point of view. In any case the most startling thing about II is its sound: pure 1980s heavy metal
Operation: Mindcrime (also known as: Geoff Tate's Operation: Mindcrime) is a progressive metal band that is fronted by the former lead singer of Queensrÿche, Geoff Tate. It is named after Queensrÿche's 1988 album of the same name. Various musicians have contributed to the band, both live and in studio and it features members such as John Moyer (also known for being in Disturbed) and Simon Wright (also known for his work with AC/DC and Ronnie James Dio). Produced by Peter Collins. Album Operation: Mindcrime. Operation: Mindcrime Lyrics. Nikki: Hello? Dr. X: Mindcrime. Operation: Mindcrime We're an underground revolution Working overtime Operation: Mindcrime There's a job for you in the system boy, with nothing to sign. Hey Nikki, you know everything That there is to do Here's a gun, take it home Wait by the phone We'll send someone over To bring you what you need You're a one man death machine Make this city bleed
Mindcrime was their breakthrough album, garnering the band commercial and critical success. Arguably their best release, this is a complex, ambitious effort, with top-notch music and a complicated storyline (a disillusioned fortune hunter of the Reagan era joins an underground movement to assassinate political scumbags) that flows smoothly from start to finish. The combination of experimental, progressive music with shorter, more radio-friendly songs works well, and enabled the band to release singles from the album while keeping the story intact.
