Moonfunk ‎(CD, Album). It was a surprising step that took Tommy Gee with this second album under the Tournesol moniker. While the previous album was essentially a blend of electronica and deep noisy athmosphere, this one was much more aiming toward trip-hop, or even vocal rap/pop. As surprising as the 3rd album from Beaumont Hannant, but in the end, courageous and very personnal indeed.

This album has an average beat per minute of 113 BPM (slowest/fastest tempos: 74/145 BPM). See its BPM profile at the bottom of the page.

Gee and Lynge take their compositional schizophrenic for a walk across the dancefloor, through the chill-room, and out the back exit to the out-jazz club down the block on their second long-player, this time for R&S proper. Moving from formless soundscapes through slick trip-hop, complex up-tempo electro, and floor-bang techno, the album succeeds on all fronts, layering style after style together in novel, well-groomed combinations.

This to me is an "album" which was a bit of a rare thing in the electronica scene around its the time of its release, a mixture of ambient, beats, hip hop, house, techno and even a wigged out jazzy tune but it all worked well together. R & S was starting to sign breaks orientated artists and moving in different directions and this album was perfect for them showcasing their history of pushing the boundries of techno / electronica and also proving that they were moving with the times, I never get sick of this one.

I really admire the highly gifted variety of this publication! This record was made for hearing it again and again and again!Especially "Mapping Your Mind" enables the impressionable listener to float away into the deep sea of unsullied ambient. This is one for unreasonable moments!

There isn’t much work around that can be compared with the Future Sound Of Londen but Moonfunk by Tournesol is one of those rare exceptions. Both blend sparkling ambient fairytales with breaks, Tournesol even pushing things further to abstract hip hop now and then. Excellent ambient release.
