Emilio Navaira, Tejano icon and Grammy-winning singer, died Monday night at age 53 in his Texas residence, authorities confirmed to the Associated Press. According to a statement sent from a New Braunfels, TX, police spokesman, the "Por siempre unidos" singer was found unresponsive at his home on Monday (May 16). He was later pronounced dead at a hospital, with preliminary results indicating he died of natural causes. An autopsy will be performed later this week

Indeed, Emilio was sometimes called the Garth Brooks of Tejano. After reaching popularity in the 1990s, Navaira won a Grammy for best Tejano album in 2002. Fellow artists and fans paid tribute to the the San Antonio native that many called a legend. In 2008 he suffered severe brain injuries after crashing his tour bus while driving drunk in Houston. In recent years he had begun touring again, and was nominated for a Latin Grammy for best Norteño album in 2013.
