Red Rose Speedway is the second studio album by Paul McCartney and Wings. The album was released in 1973 after the relatively weak commercial performance of Wings’ previous album, Wild Life.

Red Rose Speedway, the follow-up to Wings' debut album Wild Life, was released days before the group's 1973 tour of the United Kingdom began. Paul McCartney: "After I had heard Wild Life, I thought, 'Hell, we have really blown it here. Red Rose Speedway was the live act. I mean, the album's OK. It has its moments, but nothing approaching the impact of the band in person. After I had heard Wild Life, I thought, 'Hell, we have really blown it here. And the next one after that, Red Rose Speedway, I couldn't stand. The album followed several standalone singles of varying quality and chart success: Give Ireland Back To The Irish, Mary Had A Little Lamb, and Hi, Hi, Hi.

Yet television as a medium demands attention, and as the best of Red Rose Speedway indicates, Paul McCartney’s music tends to crumble under prolonged examination. He is not an especially intense lyricist, preferring instead to choose his words according to sound and feel alone, and his melodies - particularly on more uptempo material - appear to be fostered through basic reliance on a rotating riff. Mathematically this adds up to nothing, but over the radio and through repeated listenings the power of such a simple combination mounts steadily, so that what is finally delivered is the pop song.
