The programme includes: Dmitry Shostakovich String Quartets Nos 6, 8, 11, 14, 15. One of the most inspiring, dynamic and charismatic ensembles on the music scene, the members of the Atrium Quartet have established themselves as performers of deep emotion, intellect, virtuosity and technical brilliance. Highly acclaimed by audiences and the press, the quartet has performed throughout the world. The quartet was founded in 2000 by students of the St Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire (class of Professor Joseph Levinson, a cellist with the famed Taneyev Quartet)

This indispensable set of the (almost) complete Shostakovich string quartets would automatically go into every serious collection except that this part of the composer's output has attracted rivals that could reasonably be called indispensable. The Borodins (then named the Moscow Philharmonic Q. met Shostakovich in 1946, eight years after he took up the quartet form. In addition, single discs from the Hagen and St. Lawrence Qt. lean heavily on the composer's struggles under a totalitarian state, bringing out more anguish and sharper edges than the Borodins do. As a quartet writer, Shostakovic didn't evolve as dramatically as Bartok, and his personal voice only became more sorrowful, not more modernist, as he aged. As a result his fifteen quartets are more of a piece than either Bartok's or Beethoven's for that matter.
