While John and Yoko were orbiting each other, McCartney was busy in his own world. With the White Album effectively delineated as four solo projects knitted together, the obvious question is: which one of The Beatles was it that first stumbled upon rock’s holy grail? And the answer? All four of them.

The Beatles album cover designs are the most recognized in history. Meet Rutherford Chang, who collects only The White Album covers in his Soho shop. Below is a cartoon by Voorman depicting how they designed the cover. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is, without a doubt, one of the most iconic images in the history of rock and roll. But it wasn’t always the design we know and love. The photo was originally going to show the Beatles playing in a park. Luckily they scrapped that plan, and the cover took a very different turn.

Paul stated in 1968, "In my mind it's just about a (Russian) spy who's been in America for a long time and he's become very American but when he gets back to the USSR he's saying, 'Leave it 'til tomorrow to unpack my case, Honey, disconnect the phone. and all that, but to Russian women. Things were tense when they were working on this album, and Ringo walked out during recording, briefly quitting the band. Paul McCartney played drums in his place.
Ten of the album's fourteen tracks were recorded in just one day - 11th February, 1963.
