The Ensemble Aurora's Musical Offering is a fine version fully competitive with the other period instrument recordings I've heard. How well you might take to it likely depends on how serious you want this music to be. If you like it serious, this Arcana disc should be quite pleasureable and rewarding. I do caution that the group does not fare very well in most of the Canons; their strength is in the Ricercars and Trio Sonata. There are the additional two works from Ensemble Aurora; many recordings of the Musical Offering have no couplings.

Tekla Cunningham, baroque violin, viola and viola d'amore, enjoys a varied and active musical life. At home in Seattle, she is concertmaster of Stephen Stubbs' Pacific MusicWorks, principal second violin with Seattle Baroque Orchestra & Soloists, and plays regularly as concertmaster and principal player with the American Bach Soloists in California. She directs the Whidbey Island Music Festival, a summer concert series presenting vibrant period-instrument performances of repertoire ranging from Monteverdi to Beethoven. Tekla received her musical training at Johns Hopkins University and Peabody Conservatory (where she studied History and German Literature in addition to violin), Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst, in Vienna, Austria, and at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she completed a Master’s degree with Ian Swenson.

What is baroque, and when was the Baroque period? Derived from the Portuguese barroco, or oddly shaped pearl, the term baroque has been widely used since the nineteenth century to describe the period in Western European art music from about 1600 to 1750. Comparing some of music history’s greatest masterpieces to a misshapen pearl might seem strange to us today, but to the nineteenth century critics who applied the term, the music of Bach and Handel’s era sounded overly ornamented and exaggerated. timbre: While most of the instruments in a baroque ensemble are familiar, there are several prominent members no longer featured in modern ensembles. The advent of the public concert made the growing middle class an important source of income for musicians.

Berkeley’s University Baroque Ensemble (UBE) was founded in 2003 as a successor to the Collegium musicum. It is, as far as weknow, the only student group in the world that performs not just on copies of original instruments but on original eighteenth-century instruments. These include some fine antique violins from the A. Salz Collection, donated to the Music Department over forty years ago. The UBE is currently open to players of violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, keyboard, and guitar (or lute)
