Schubert: Symphony N. ; Beethoven: Symphony N. Philharmonia Orchestra. The 1st Symphony, given the nickname "Spring", is full of youthful sentiments and the joy of spring. I listened with rapt attention, wondering if Sawallisch could expound on the charm and beauty in the work while still letting the drama and power come through. Instantly apparent was the fact Sawallisch wasn't going to have any trouble displaying Schumann's might. I found it gripping but at the same I don't know if I would have known this was supposed to be describing spring. I felt this way throughout, hungrily devouring the splendor of the playing while some of my desires went unfulfilled. Where are Schumann's blissful melodies that touch a deep chord inside of you, making you feel that heaven has come down to earth?
