More Than a New Discovery is the debut album by Bronx-born singer, songwriter, and pianist Laura Nyro. It was recorded during 1966 and released early in following year on the Verve Folkways imprint of the Verve Records label. The album included several songs that would become hits for other artists. Blood, Sweat & Tears scored with "And When I Die" (US The 5th Dimension with "Wedding Bell Blues" (US and "Blowin' Away" (US and Barbra Streisand with "Stoney End" (US #6).

More Than a New Discovery was originally issued on the Folkways label in conjunction with Verve Records in early 1967. The contents were subsequently reissued as The First Songs in 1969 after she began to garner national exposure with her first two LPs for Columbia - Eli and the Thirteenth Confession (1968) and New York Tendaberry (1969), respectively. Many of these titles became international hits for some of the early '70s most prominent pop music vocalists and bands.

More Than a New Discovery (AKA the First Songs) is informed by the styles of Laura's youth. She had just turned 19 when she recorded the album in early 1966, and the songs retain a youthful exuberance and glisten with beautiful Pop melodies and then-fashionable, sturdy '60s NY arrangements. More Than a New Discovery" sounds a LOT better than "First Songs". First Songs" was the first Nyro album I ever bought, and the sonic quality always bugged me. This remaster/reissue of the original version is such a relief. There are still some imperfections, but hell, the tapes are like 50 years old.

Today’s young female singer-songwriters will have to go some to equal the precocious talent of Laura Nyro on this debut album, recorded in 1965 when she was still just 1. We’ll tell you what’s true. You can form your own view.

More Than a New Discovery is the debut album by Bronx-born singer, songwriter, and pianist Laura Nyro. Lyrics to the album More Than a New Discovery by Laura Nyro. Popularity More Than a New Discovery.

Before Laura Nyro became the dark poetess of – New York’s answer to the Ladies of the Canyon – she made this, an album of crafted Brill Building pop arranged in the big, blousy, orchestral style of Springfield and Streisand. Once she had been sprung from her contract and given artistic freedom by manager David Geffen, Nyro disowned the album as a commercial compromise, despite its enormous success as a trove of hit songs for others. Fifth Dimension, Blood Swea at and Tears and Streisand were among those bending the knee to the talented Bronx teenager, who wrote the most.
