This excellent LP collects together some of Benny Goodman's best early recordings, all cut at least a few years before he became known as The King of Swing and also co-starring the great trombonist/singer Jack Teagarden. BG is heard during 1929-31 with Red Nichols's Five Pennies (whose eight selections include "Indiana," "Dinah" and Teagarden's famous vocal on "The Sheik of Araby"), the 1930 session by Irving Mills's Hotsy Totsy Gang that included an ailing Bix Beiderbecke, an Adrian Rollini date from 1934 and four gems by the Joe Venuti-Eddie. This is highly enjoyable music that serves as a fine introduction to early pre-swing jazz.
