Denny Zeitlin at Maybeck: Maybeck Recital Hall Series Volume 27 is an album of solo performances by jazz pianist Denny Zeitlin. The album was recorded at the Maybeck Recital Hall in Berkeley, California in October 1992. Most of the material is standards.

Although Denny Zeitlin, MD is probably a fine psychiatrist, it is the jazz world's loss that he is not a full-time musician. This live solo performance is one of his greatest triumphs, starting with his infectious opener, "Blues on the Side," which is far too complex to be compared to typical blues. He tackles John Coltrane's "Lazy Bird" at a furious tempo worthy of its composer. Zeitlin's refreshingly deliberate approach to "'Round Midnight" best captures its dark undertones

Zeitlin's refreshingly deliberate approach to "'Round Midnight" best captures its dark undertones. The pianist's lyrical side is also evident.

Maybeck Recital Hall, also known as Maybeck Studio for Performing Arts, is located inside the Kennedy-Nixon House located at 1537 Euclid Avenue in Berkeley, California, United States. It was built in 1914 by Bernard Maybeck. The hall seats up to 50 people and was designed upon commission for the Nixon family, local arts patrons who wanted a live-in studio for their daughter Milda's piano teacher, Mrs. Alma Kennedy

Denny Zeitlin We know from Greek mythology that a labyrinth is a maze that seemingly never ends. When a musician performs before an audience, he/she leads the listener through the maze-thread of his/her artistic mind with artistic fulfillment beaming at the exit point. The Labyrinth has a special meaning for the celebrated chiatrist Denny Zeitlin, a composer of import and an artist with more than sixteen recordings as a leader and who has worked/recorded with many, including Charlie Haden, Herbie Hancock, and Pat Metheny.
