Lux Aeterna is a piece for 16-part mixed choir, written by György Ligeti in 1966. It is most famous for its use in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey. The text (in Latin) is from the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass: Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine, cum sanctis tuis in aeternum, quia pius es. Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine; et lux perpetua luceat eis, which means "May everlasting light shine upon them, O Lord, with thy saints in eternity, for thou art merciful

by Boston Symphony Orchestra and William Steinberg. 32 - 6. Uranus, The Magician by Boston Symphony Orchestra and William Steinberg. The other one, which came out a decade before and doesn't sound as good, has Lux Aeterna by Ligeti as the companion piece. I encountered this album of Gustav Holst's THE PLANETS when it was first released on LP back in the early 1970s. The eye catching cover art, which was originally printed on a mylar cover (remember mylar?), was an ideal visual metaphor for the nature of the performance contained within. The sound was truly spectacular as befits this grand orchestral suite which ranges from the thunderous full orchestral climaxes of MARS through the delicate, ethereal nature of the wordless chorus in NEPTUNE.
