Veteran Cuban jazz pianist Chucho Valdés pays tribute to many of his mentors and peers on Chucho's Steps. The first hint of his intention comes with the instrumentation of a sextet also featuring Juan Carlos de Castro Rojo Blanco on drums, Lázaro Rivero Alarcón on bass, Yaroldy Abreu on percussion, Carlos Miyares Hernández on tenor saxophone, and Reynaldo Melián Álvarez on trumpet. Valdés dubs the band "the Afro-Cuban Messengers," thus referencing both Dizzy Gillespie's bebop orchestra and Art Blakey's hard bop band the Jazz Messengers
Chucho's Steps is an album released by jazz pianist Chucho Valdés and his band, the Afro-Cuban Messengers. The album was released in 2010 by Four Quarters Entertainment and was produced by Valdés himself, who also composed all of the music. It won the 2011 Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album. Some of the tracks were written in honor of various jazz musicians including the late Joe Zawinul, "Zawinul's Mambo", and the Marsalis family, "New Orleans".
The semiology contained on pianist Chucho Valdes' magnificent Chucho's Steps points to the character of the music before the disc has even been taken out of its sleeve. First there's the name of the group and its reference to drummer Art Blakey's ferociously swinging Jazz Messengers. Less obviously, it summons up the spirit-charged crossroads of the Delta blues and other folk traditions: dangerous places able to confer great power. Wherever he got it, Valdés has the power, and it's still in the ascendant.

Chucho's new album with the Afro-Cuban Messengers, which will extensively tour the USA in October 2010, marks Chucho's return to the US for the first time in 7 years. Disc: 1. 1. Zawinul's Mambo. I love Chucho and heard him do this album live. The recording doesn't match the LIVE performance but it is close enough to take me back to the live experience.
