Art Pepper (1925-1982) was called the greatest alto saxophonist of the post-Charlie Parker generation. But his autobiography. Speaking of Art's wife, Laurie Pepper, who co-authored the book, I can't say enough about the fantastic job she did culling together all of these interviews she did with Art and his acquaintances, relatives, et. and fashioning it into a very readable book that just flows very nicely from beginning to end. She has also recently published a follow-up to this book called "Art Pepper: Why I Stuck with A Junkie Jazzman"

Art and Laurie Pepper's Straight Life-The Story of Art Pepper exists as a classic biography within an autobiography, wrapped in a memoir. Published originally in 1979 and then again in 1994 with a new afterword, updating the alto saxophonist's story from 1979 until his death in 1982, Straight Life remains the touchstone of the post-bebop West Coast jazz life. The album art of these LPs depicts a physically beautiful man, intense and smoldering. The music reveals an alto saxophonist and clarinetist with an empathic knack for ballads and burners, a knack that would transform into a battlefield in the latter part of Pepper's career. In the recording chronology, after Pepper had recorded the sides which would become Intensity (Contemporary, 1960) on November 23- 25, 1960, it would be 15 years before Pepper would record again as a leader.

Cassette - Original Jazz Classics, Galaxy/OJC. Altoist Art Pepper recorded many albums for the Galaxy label during 1979-1982, all of which have been reissued in a massive 16-CD "complete" box set. This single CD is pretty definitive and serves as a perfect introduction to Pepper's second (and most rewarding) period. Not only is there a superior version of Pepper's famous title cut but very emotional (and explorative) renditions of "September Song" and "Nature Bo.
